A coven is generally considered to be a gathering witches who work with magic together. The word “coven” is short for the word “covenant,” which is an agreement or promise.
Those witches who choose to work with others unite behind a commitment to the ideal of a group who comes together “in perfect love and perfect trust.” This is a rare situation indeed, even between husband and wife, much less a larger group!
Covens have fallen out of favor because of cults such as those led by Charles Manson or David Karesh. In any group which grants power, people are likely to be abused, sexually, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. This doesn’t have to be in a magical situation. It can be in the Catholic Church itself, as well as in the United States Congress.
Covens, like book clubs, come together and fall apart with regularity. What keeps them alive is realizing that they have a life of their own, and treating the organization with respect, appreciation, and mutual support. It is not a family, a church, or a 12-Step Program. It is a collaboration for a common goal. In order to achieve that, such a goal must be clearly defined and agreed upon by those who are part of the team.
