Mars, the Roman god of war, was known to the Greeks as Ares, like the sign of Aries the Ram. The two deities had a big difference though. Ares was a source of destructive conflicts that tore apart communities. Mars was a wellspring of productive conflicts that brought lasting peace. Over time, the two merged, and war became the path to peace.
Originally, Mars was closely identified with the pastoral deity Silvanus, who was a god of woods and uncultivated lands, protector of field boundaries and cattle, and a protector against wolves. The month of March was named after Mars March because of its rough and boisterous weather. He was tied to agriculture because seeds required fertilization.
