Practical Magic Astrology: Introduction to Saturn

Nothing in our experience is anupadaka - without a parent. This includes the gods. Even Cinderella’s fairy godmother had to make her coach out of a pumpkin. Everything comes from something, so you know about someone by their parents and their familial relationships, whether god or human.

Saturn was the son of Ouranus and Gaia. Ouranus was literally the sky, just as his consort Gaia (Gaea) was the earth. From this union were born twelve Titans: Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys and Cronus (Saturn). Knowing that all creations must eventually destroy their creator, Ouranus locked his children away inside Gaia’s belly, giving her immense pain.

Thus seeking relief, Gaia persuaded her sons to rebel. Four sons positioned themselves at the corners of the world, ready to seize their father as he descended to lie with Gaia. Cronus/Saturn took his place in the center and there castrated Ouranus with the adamantine sickle Gaia had given him. Adamantine is a variant of the word diamond - the hardest mineral on the planet.
