Feng Shui Continuing Education: Asian Gods and Goddesses

We in the West are much more familiar with Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. We even know about the Norse deities and some of the Celtic deities. But the Asian gods and goddesses are unknown to us. This workshop will introduce more than twenty, which is a great place to start. There are male and female deities, and even a teen god – something for everyone!

1. Guanyin (Guan Yin, Kwan Yin, Kwun Yum) is Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion. Her name means that she hears the cries of humanity. She is known to help the distressed and hungry and gives comfort and aid wherever it is needed. She is usually shown in a white flowing robe, wearing necklaces of royalty. She carries a container (which is much like that carried by the Archangel Raphael) that is said to contain pure water, the divine nectar of life; and a willow branch that she uses to sprinkle that water. She may be accompanied by a dove, which, when flying towards her, symbolizes fecundity. If she is seen with a book or scroll, they represent the Dharma and her study of that sacred text. You may see her depicted standing on the head of a dragon, which refers to the story about her helping to save the son of the Dragon King.
