Continuing Feng Shui Education: Your Spot

Overview of Feng Shui Types of Spots

When creating your spot, you need to know more about yourself to discover which Celestial Animal elements your body likes to relax with. Those with plenty of the Water element of the Black Tortoise must be free to spread out horizontally. Whether watching television, working on a project, reading a book, or just snuggling in with a beverage, Water folks will feel most at ease when they can spread out, so their most supportive spot will either be the sofa, a recliner, or a chair with a footstool.

Those with an abundance of the Wood element of the Green Dragon need to be active more than they need to sit and rest. They will prefer a spot that is solid, has a strong structure, and is rooted, not moved around much at all. Lumbar support will be vital, as well as a tall back. Wood legs, arms, or slats in their spot are bonus enhancements to this energy, as are natural colors such as greens or browns and organic patterns, but not too frilly. They will require side support, plenty of light, and things to fidget with. Keep list making supplies nearby, as well as contact information.

Fire folks are exuberant and extravagant, sparking with the element of the Red Phoenix. They will have a very hard time sitting still for long as fire never stops moving. Phoenix people need rocking chairs, swivel chairs, and chairs with wheels. They are adaptable and thrive on variety and creativity. Here is where all the kids and animals want to sit too. Fire folks required constant refreshing of fuel and so prefer to reinvigorate their space seasonally. The constant drive to act can cause trouble focusing or staying organized. This spot will need places for their stuff and plenty of light. Position their spot to be seen, rather than tucked away, but still in the command position.

Golden Cicada’s gang of Earth people are nurturers. They want to feed people and take care of them. They will insist on lots of spots for everyone else, as well as snacks, before they will sit down. Place their seat so they can see the kitchen and the front door. If company is coming, they are on duty! The urge to nurture will compel them to have supplies on hand at hand - cookies in a tin or candy in the drawer. There will be treats in view, and if there are not, it’s time to shop or to bake. Their spot will be solid, oversized, and with wide arms to support kids, pets, and butts of pals. They will need tissues, scissors, pen s, paper, band-aids, aspirin, pet combs, a trash can, and a three-way light. There should be photos of family and loved ones visible from their spot. There will be handiwork, whether knitting, crochet, or embroidery beside the spot. A throw made by a loved one, a treasure from a grandparent, a gift from their beloved - all of these must be near their spot or they can’t and won’t settle.

The team members of the Metal element of the White Tiger are always seeking to refine their view of life. More than anyone else, these folks cannot tolerate clutter, too much of anything–even color, or too much input. They will prefer silence to digital chatter. There is an overabundance of details in life and they seek to sift out the chatter and chaff. When they are overstimulated, they need solitude like a drowning person needs air. (Not exaggerating.) They would rather enjoy their solitude than be drowned in an ocean of people and noise. They will want their spot to be “just so.” Do not adjust it. You can clean around it and take out the trash, but don’t add things. They will want a clock visible from their spot, as well as control of the temperature, light, and all technology. If a Tiger is in their spot, don’t talk to them. Just be quiet and be with them without disturbing them. Or leave them alone. They truly appreciate their solitude.
