Continuing Feng Shui Education: Home Offices

I have been working from a home office since 1988. I find the best spaces for my work zones are the formal living and dining room in homes with a den and breakfast area, or in the bedroom situated right at the front door, so that clients don’t have to go through the house to get to my office. Also, I can see people as they approach the front door.

I have lived in a place so small that I was forced to split my bedroom into two zones: one for sleeping and one for working. I found that whenever I lay in my bed facing my desk, I thought about all the work I had waiting for me to get to it. So I set up a folding screen made of tall shutters hinged together. That helped separate sleep from never-ending responsibilities. It did not help, however, to prevent the man who decided he “had to have” me from launching his body onto mine. I can remember thinking, “You have GOT to be kidding me,” as well as, “Note to self - get the office out of the bedroom!” Yeah - trust me on this. Don’t meet clients in your office/bedroom. The most surprising things can and will happen. (My Romeo was 5 foot flat, and about half as wide, 20 years younger than me, and married - just like I was at the time!)

The world has changed with the pandemic. You may or may not still be working from home, but most adults need a work zone, in case they need to work for themselves - do their taxes, pay bills, update a resume, write a will, and such things. Doing these tasks on the floor, in the bed, or in an inauspicious space will not support your efforts. When you decide that you and your projects are worthy of support, you will begin to set up your own Home Office.
