Amulets are objects which protect those who wear them. The word amulet comes from Latin roots and is comprised of “am” from “amah” referring to the mother or goddess, as well as to love, as in “amor.” “Let” refers to its small size. Thus, an amulet is a small object which protects with a mother’s love. Any amulet’s most important characteristic is its power to protect its owner from danger or harm. Amulets are usually worn on a chain or cord around the neck so that they lay over the heart. Not all pendants (charms that hang from necklaces) are amulets, but any given pendant may indeed be an amulet. Charms may be any item - animate or inanimate, but they don’t necessarily hang from the neck to protect.
